Keep Calm and Keep Clean for Spring

Ahh the joy of spring, from the daffodils coming up in your flower beds to the budding of trees to remind us of warm weather coming. It's time to spring clean! But did you know that Spring Cleaning actually has numerous health benefits?

According to a survey done by BBC, housework could cut stress and anxiety by up to 20%! If that's not motivation to get through your list of chores, I don't know what is! Dr. McDonnell, of Rush University Medical Center, states that it is helpful to declutter, vacuum, and dust all the time. She says that an estimated 30% of the children she sees have some type of respiratory issue. Dust, pet dander, mold, and mildew can all set off an asthma attack or other respirational problems.

Clearly, cleaning for spring is more than just a seasonal tradition. Here are four ways spring cleaning can improve your overall health:

Healthier Eating and Exercise:

Studies have shown that there is a direct correlation between a well kept home, physical activity, and choosing healthier food. It seems that your home can either make or break you by setting you up to choose to be active, and eat healthy, or cause you to become lethargic and make you want less nutritious meals.

Spring Cleaning can help motivate us to try out a healthier lifestyle!

You can set yourself up for success by opening up the windows everyday, welcoming fresh air in, and stale air out. You can also store healthier food options closer to eye level in the fridge and pantry, and make sure you move the unhealthy choices to the back.

Increase Your Immune System:

Apart from lessening the effects of seasonal allergies, as we said above, a clean house can help you breathe better by building a healthy immune system!

When your house isn't clean, it collects toxins that can irritate the respiratory system - especially in the winter.

Cleaning for your immune health isn't complicated and your future self will thank you.

Dusting the legs of furniture, tops of frames and mirrors, baseboards, and window sills can all have a positive effect on your health. Furthermore, vacuuming all floors, carpets, rugs, and curtains will help eliminate dust in the air and keep your home fresh. Don't forget to wash your bedding and blankets at least once a week. Tip: Put your pillows in the dryer on high heat for ten minutes to kill dust mites!

Reduce Stress & Depression:

With the Pandemic came a rise in businesses switching their employees to work remotely from home. According to Boston University, depression has climbed to 32.8% in the last two years, and is now affecting 1 in every 3 American adults.

With the majority of Americans working from home, it makes sense that your mental health can benefit from keeping your space neat and tidy.

Dr. Tricia Wolanin, a clinical psychologist and organizing expert states, "when we clear clutter, it has the potential to clear our mental space and attention span." This sounds like a great solution to a growing problem.

So, how do we declutter for mental health? We can start by embracing cleaning as a way to de-stress. Use the list of chores you have to your advantage! Cleaning can foster a positive attitude and help clear your mind. And if you're struggling with sleep, you can help promote relaxation by diffusing essential oils and eliminating clutter in your bedroom.

Prevent Illness

Maintaining the cleanliness of all touch points can help you avoid illness and stop the spread of bacteria.

It's recommended to deep clean your sink everyday, as it's been shown to harbor more bacteria than a toilet - gross! Experts also recommend to clean bathrooms and other shared areas more frequently to cut down on the circulation of viruses.

Wendy Bazillion suggests scheduling tasks in the kitchen (such as, cleaning out the fridge and freezer, countertops, pantry, and cupboards) throughout the week to avoid becoming overwhelmed. Separating your work will also allow you to get a deeper clean, which will in-turn benefit your whole home.

As you can see, spring cleaning isn't just a seasonal tradition, it fosters essential health and wellness for you and your family, and provides the peace of mind we as humans crave.
